New Delhi [India], October 13: Drawing its spirit from John Milton’s Paradise Lost—“Sing O Heav’nly Muse…in the Beginning how the Heav’ns and Earth / Rose out of Chaos”—the exhibition explores the delicate balance between chance and order. Sehgal transforms fragments of paper, often discarded remnants, into lyrical collages that echo the vitality of spring, or Rituraj Basant.

A Dance Between Chaos and Meaning

Sehgal’s describes collage as “painting without a brush”. She cuts, layers, and composes intuitively, allowing fragments to fall into place until they settle into surprising harmonies. Her works are shaped not by rigid plans but by discovery—where intuition guides chance into form.

During the pandemic, she recalls, paper became her only available material. What began as limitation turned into liberation, giving rise to new experiments in mixed media. Out of scraps and textures, she crafted her own language of form and color, weaving stories from what was at hand.

Gold, silver, and copper shimmer across her surfaces, catching light in ways that shift with the viewer’s gaze. Birds, leaves, and flowers emerge not as literal depictions but as impressions—silhouettes and gestures that hold memory and presence. Her collages invite viewers into a romance between simplicity and intricacy, accident and intention.

    The Artist’s Voice

“My art is an intuitive dialogue with nature, expressing not simply what I see but what I feel—where the rhythms and textures of the world are transformed into visual form,” says Sehgal.

Born in spring, she often turns to the season’s renewal as a wellspring of inspiration. The joy of bloom and the cycles of nature continually shape her palette, reminding us that beauty often grows out of disorder.

    About Shibani Sehgal

Shibani Sehgal is an Indian artist and illustrator widely recognized for her mixed-media works inspired by nature and memory. She holds a BFA in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi (1992) and a Master’s in History of Art from the National Museum Institute (1995), where she received the Gold Medal for research.

Her career bridges artistic practice and art scholarship, giving her work both depth and intimacy. Sehgal’s art has been exhibited in solo and group shows across India, Europe, and the United States, and is represented in notable private and institutional collections, including that of a former Vice President of India.

Despite this recognition, she remains deeply committed to the process itself—cutting, layering, and building meaning from fragments. Her collages speak of intimacy, memory, and transformation, turning the quiet poetry of paper into luminous landscapes of thought and emotion.
